A prescriptive theory of human-computer cooperative problem solving is proposed, drawing on research in the fields of human communication, distributed artificial intelligence, and cognitive systems engineering. The architecture of a computer-based associate system that incorporates the principles of the theory is described. It incorporates specific features associated with the domain of satellite ground control, which have been derived from a case study of the CLEAR expert system.
