The Center for Electromechanics at The University of Texas at Austin (CEM-UT) has designed, built, and is presently testing a 20-T on-axis, single-turn, toroidal-field (TF) coil. Scaling of the prototype 20-T TF coil was selected to be 0.06 on the basis of the maximum current capability of CEM-UT's 60-MJ HPG (homopolar generator) power supply. which has a rating of 9 MA at 100 V in a parallel configuration. Stresses and temperatures reached in the scale TF coil are representative of those that would be experienced in a full-scale IGNITEX TF coil with a 1.5-m major radius and a 5-s flat top current profile. The advantages of a single-turn coil design are described. The single-turn coil is made from 36 wedge-shaped. beryllium-copper plates. Beryllium copper was chosen as the magnet conductor because of its excellent combination of yield strength and electrical conductivity.
