The BBC has announced the introduction of a stereo television service from to Autumn of 1991. The meet this date the major task is one of reengineering the transmitter chain for NICAM origination and, with it, the replacement of the existing programme distribution on mono sound-in-syncs (SIS) with two channel SIS. Experimental transmissions have been originating from Crystal Palace since 18th July 1986 and these are proving vital for both engineers and programme makers in the run up to a full service. New stereo working techniques, in both technical and operational areas are being developed to cut the time that stereo has traditionally added to post production. Many of the pitfalls have been identified without adversely affecting the mono listener at home. To date some 1700 stereo programmes have been available to all those with NICAM equipment, and who receive their signal from Crystal Palace or its relays.
