DCC Limited, as part of the Hughes Aircraft Company, is closely linked with one of the major US suppliers of VSAT systems, Hughes network Systems (HNS). An important contribution to their success is the matching of technological developments to customer needs. Consideration of these developments in the context of market opportunities shows what is likely to sell-hence 'the user driven system'. HNS have developed the concept of the Integrated Satellite Business Network (ISBN). Nearly all applications involve a central location communicating with a large number of remote terminals, where the users of the remote terminals need to access information on a central database and the company's management needs to interrogate the remote sites to extract data. This requirement dictates the most common topology encountered in VSAT systems.
