Presents a parabolic equation likely to displace mode and ray methods for the modelling of clear-air propagation in the troposphere. A PC based forecasting model has been developed which is more efficient than either of these earlier approaches. Radar coverage diagrams of antennas in arbitrary refractive index structures are easily generated. This new tool enables the effect of the propagation channel on radar system performance to be investigated. Complex problems, including multipath and ducting, and the frequency selective effects of these on short pulse radars, can now be tackled quantitatively for the first time.
