Fibre optics in developing countries-obstacles and opportunities for rural communities

Fibre optic systems are increasingly found in almost every sector of the telecommunications networks of developed countries. But what relevance do these developments have to rural communities in developing countries? The authors attempt to answer this question by first reviewing some of the main fibre optic trends in developed countries. This is followed by a brief look at the competing technologies for telecommunications in rural areas of developing countries where fibre is just one among many possible options. They then address some of the main obstacles and opportunities related to applying fibre in rural environments. Finally answers will be given to the question: to what extent is fibre optics an 'appropriate' technology. That is, how does it measure up to the actual needs of developing countries?.
