The end use properties of paper are strongly affected by the drying process. Paper has an ability to shrink during drying and, depending on the amount of shrinkage, large variations in paper properties are obtained. An apparatus was described that was capable of controlling the stresses and strains of the sheet independently and simulataneously in two perpendicaular directions during drying. The function of the apparatus and its possibilities to produce reproducible results were evaluated and found to be satisfactory. A number of trials with different drying strategies were carried out. The intent of the study was to investigate the relations between stresses, strains and properties during drying.
