Application of PSA to the Day-to-Day Plant Operation

Increasingly probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) techniques complement traditional engineering analysis, addressing nuclear power plant design, operation, and regulatory requirements. The objective of risk-informed decision making is to detect and control plant operation from a risk perspective. Increased PSA application is motivated by the realization that PSA develops effective and realistic risk management programs at a reasonable cost. PSA can be used in several different roles. In one role, PSA insights can modify a plant's major operational -related programs in the most risk-informed and cost effective fashion. Risk-informed Inservice Testing, Graded QA, and Risk-Informed Inservice Inspection are examples of such applications. Another role for PSA is to support the day to day activities of the plant. This paper presents examples of PSA application in te latter role at the Surry Power Station (SPS). Surry is a two unit, three loop PWR unclear power plant located in Virginia, USA.
