Near-real-time transcutaneous vascular clipping guided by magnetic resonance angiography: a minimally invasive technique for vascular control
Abstract: itial tumor therapy guided by imaging techniquesis minimally invasive and a promising surgical approachwhich will become clinically practical only wheneffective, simple, and safe modalities for tumorexcision and control of tumor vascular supply areavailable. In a novel experiment utilizing a 1.5 Tmagnetic resonance (MR) scanner, the carotid artery ofa New Zealand white rabbit was identified and thenclamped using the Premium Surgiclip$+tm$/ 9.0'disposable automatic clip applier. The magneticresonance imager equipped with an angiography packagewas used to locate vasculature in the carotid triangleof the rabbit via fast scan techniques. The artery wasthen clamped with titanium clips, and repeat magneticresonance angiography (MRA) clearly demonstrated thecessation of blood flow within the chosen vessel. Theexperimental results are promising, since theangiography package not only provided the visualizationof the arterial vessel, but was also used to guide anMR compatible surgical instrument to the vessel, withno artifact seen. !10
