摘要

Recent explosive growth of steelmaking capacity resulted in raw materials shortages and price increases. To mitigate the negative impact of supply-demand imbalance, conservation, re-cycling and new technology offer most promise. Thin slab casting and rolling is the lowest cost method for HS hot-band production. Microalloyed HS steels may economically satisfy the engineering needs with less steel as a replacement for commodity type carbon steels. Substitution is beneficial both to steel producer and consumer, contributes to energy savings and reduces ecologically harmful emissions. Furthermore, substitution may contribute to a sustainable rate of steel production without slowing down the rate of economic growth.
