Over the years, forging dies and processes controlled by subcontractors have been lost forrnlegacy weapon components. In order to decrease production lead time on spare parts, especiallyrnfor low purchase order quantities, subcontractors have proposed alternative manufacturingrnmethods in lieu of the near-net shaped forging requirement. In order to evaluate these proposalsrna process of review was developed and validated. A team would utilize the flowcharts for arnspecific weapon component to help determine if an alternate manufacturing method should bernconsidered based on five criteria that are assigned values. These values are then weighted. Ifrnfeasible, the team continues following the flowchart to collect/establish current Technical DatarnPackage (TDP) requirements and then developing an applicable plan for side by side comparisonrntesting. These flowcharts were developed over several iterations with various mortar weaponrncomponents and successfully validated with testing.
