The 7th International 'Symposium on Materials in a Space Environment' was hosted by CERT-ONERA at Sup-Aero in Toulouse, France in June 1997. Three years have separated this conference from the previous one, as it was the practice for this series of Conferences which are traditionally organised under the joint auspices of CNES, ESA and ONERA.rnThe ongoing series of Symposia continues to be of outstanding importance as attested by the number of participants attracted from the spacecraft material community around the world. Eighteen countries were represented this year: China, Russia, Ukraine, Japan, Brazil, Israel, plus those of Europe and North America. Once again, this event brought together those concerned with the prediction of the material performance in space environment in order to generate a general awarenesss of the problems encountered. It gave the participants the opportunity to receive updated information on what knowledge exists or is being acquired, what problems need solving. It constituted an effective forum for the direct interchange of data and ideas on space degradation, and for sharing practical experience.
