Phenomenological modelling of structural embrittlement in perforated plates

In the field of crash simulations, one difficulty concerns the representativeness of material and geometrical non-linear behaviours. In spite of recent developments of computational mechanics, finite element codes do not succeed in modelling the proper ruin modes when they depend on material failure. For instance, the mechanical ruin of punched plates (which is the basis for riveted aeronautical structures) cannot be well predicted as long as the plastic strain location is not taken into account one way (fine mesh) or another (macroscopic level). The aim of the presented work is to propose an original methodology to develop a dedicated shell element which takes into account, at a macroscopic level, the structural embrittlement due to the presence of a hole in the plate. After an illustration of the topic, analytical and numerical analyses are undertaken in order to evaluate the structural embrittlement phenomena. Finally the methodology is presented and discussed.
