The author will show how complex preforms can be manufactured and ultrasonically cut to net shape at high speeds prior to the molding process. Prior to the introduction of this technology, high volume production of net shape complex preforms has historically not been possible due to the lack of a fast, incremental preforming process in line with a high speed, accurate net shape cutting process. Complex preforms are non homogeneous, using various reinforcing materials located strategically in the laminate schedule for specific engineering values and can include core materials of any type, fasteners and inserts in the preform. Complex preforms are engineered to provide anisotropic properties in the molded article.
