High Durability of Fluoropolymer Coating System in Marine Atmospheric Environment

There are many techniques to prevent of steel structures. Among them application of organic coatings is a popular and effective technique. High performance organic coatings have been developed for protection of steel structures at the time. Reentry, inorganic zinc rich paint/epoxy/fluoropolymer coating system was applied to offshore and onshore structures in Japan. These anti-corrosive performance and weahtharability was demonstrated. Authors are evaluating performance of fuoropolymer coating system from 20 years ago. An outdoor test and an accelerated weathering test were carried out. Gloss retention during the exposure service was measured and after the tests the surface of the sample was observed by SEM, analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy to investigate the surface degradation. The results showed that the fluoropolymer coating was extremely superior to other coatings such as the polyurethane coating. And anti-corrosive performance of fluoropolymer coating system was excellent.
