This paper provides guidance for selecting and designingrnoptimum sand control systems for water injector wells. Thisrnguidance is based on a detailed study on issues and problemsrnin water injection wells in the Foinaven field operated by BP.rnGiven openhole, stand-alone screen failures experiencedrnon two Foinaven water injector wells, a water-injectorrnsandface-completion study was commissioned with thernfollowing objectives: to review the issues and problems inrnwater injector wells, propose possible solutions, and conductrnengineering designs for water-injector sandface completionsrnlisted below.rn? Cased and perforatedrn? Openhole stand-alone screensrn? Openhole gravel packsrn? Openhole frac packsrn? Cased hole frac packsrn? Expandable screensrnThe paper summarises possible causes of sand controlrnfailure in the Foinaven field water injection wells and providesrnpotential mitigations by selecting solutions using conventionalrnand innovative technology.
