Combining with the EL. 1,210m plane abutment stability and reinforcing treatment measures of Xiaowan arch dam, physical model was applied to the research in this paper. In the research, catching factors which mainly affect the stability of the dam, the overloading method was used in the geomechanical model test. Based on the result of the test, the deformation distribution characteristics of the reinforcing treatment measures were analyzed in contrast against the original scheme without any reinforcement. The failure process, mode and mechanism of the abutment were discussed, the overload safety degrees of the two schemes were gained, and the stabilities of abutments were scientifically evaluated. Meanwhile, the rationality of the reinforcing treatment measures was analyzed, and the references for design and construction were provided.
