Demands for using environmentally friendly additives in hydraulic fluids prompted to revisitrnthe package compositions and substitute components of environmental concern. However,rnchanging the composition of hydraulic fluid additive packages is a difficult task whichrngenerally takes a long development time. As existing standard tests need 3 weeks to decide onrnpass and fail, a short time screening proceedure was needed. A new electrochemical currentrnnoise (ECN) analysis method (CoulCount) proved appropriate to decide about the inhibitorrnperformance within a few days. The paper describes this special ECN technique and the datarnevaluation for which a user-friendly software has been developed. It appeared that ECNrnmeasurements between two 'identical' steel crevice electrodes or at crevice enhancedrnbimetallic element electrodes (steel/bronze) as well as ECN analysis with sensors consistingrnof a bimetallic element between steel and bronze can all be used for short time testing ofrninhibitor performance in hydraulic fluids, specifically to prevent pitting corrosion. Thisrnmethod is also applicable for monitoring purposes.
