Significant progress has been made in recent years on the study of micro-abrasion ofrnmaterials. There is now a good understanding of the various modes of micro-abrasion.rnIn addition, micro-abrasion mechanism maps have been constructed showing transitionsrnbetween the regimes as a function of main tribological parameters.rnThere has however been little work carried out to investigate the combined effects ofrnmicro-abrasion and corrosion. Such work has important implications in areas such asrndentistry and hip joint prostheses, where micro-abrasion may occur in a corrosivernmedia. Furthermore, there has been no attempt to date to distinguish between microabrasionrncorrosion regimes.rnIn this work, the micro-abrasion of steel against a polymer was investigated at a rangernof loads and applied potentials. The results were used to identify regimes of microabrasion-rncorrosion. Mechanistic maps were generated based on the results, showing therntransitions between the regimes as a function of the tribological and corrosionrnparameters.
