MEASUREMENT OF THE ELECTRIC CURRENT DISTRIBUTION IN AN ANODE

Carbon anode, which carries the electricity and provides therncarbon necessary for the electrochemical reaction in thernelectrolytic cell, is an essential component of the primaryrnaluminum production. Energy efficiency and environmentalrnimpact are still the key issues in modern aluminum smelters; thus,rnit is important to control the quality of anodes which stronglyrninfluences the energy consumption and the greenhouse gasrnemissions.rnAs the uniform current distribution appears to be one of thernindicators of the anode quality, an experimental system has beenrndeveloped to measure the current distribution in an anode. Thisrnarticle describes the measurement system used for laboratoryrnanodes and presents the experimental results. The results are alsorncompared with the electrical resistance distribution measurementsrnin the anodes, and the comparison shows good agreement.
