During the last ten years, automotive engine performances have been notably improved. The loads applied to the different moving elements - pistons, connecting-rods, crank-shaft - have greatly increased. In order to have a better knowledge of bearing mechanical behaviour, the authors have developed a set of computer codes based on efficient algorithms that give precise descriptions of lubrication parameters in all the bearings that link pistons, connecting-rods and crank-shaft to the engine block. After a description of some lubrication breakdown examples, the chosen models for the EHD lubrication study of engine bearings are described. Computer codes that have been developed are presented and some significant results are given.
