RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF A SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING FACILITY

During the recent upturn in the semiconductor industry, the trend was towards construction ofrnnew facilities, expanding and retrofitting existing facilities. The labor resources required for thesernprojects demand unique skill sets. The construction of some of the facilities was delayed due to a lack ofrnskilled labor. In the US market, the combination of low unemployment, attrition, and lack of newrnworkforce entrants has resulted in a dearth of qualified facility design personnel, construction trades, andrnskilled craft workers. With the current downturn in the market, it is in the best interests of the industry tornfocus on improving the training of the workforce. To address this problem a research project to identifyrnthe resource requirements for construction of semiconductor manufacturing facility has been undertakenrnby CREATE, Construction Research and Education for Advanced Technology Environments, a researchrnconsortium at the Del E. Webb School of Construction at Arizona State University. The study is basedrnon a baseline semiconductor manufacturing facility. The resources required for the design andrnconstruction of the baseline semiconductor facility from initial programming to the completion of thernstructure will be determined. The required skill sets for the workforce will be evaluated based on thernparameters developed through discussions with industry professionals. The study will be extended torncompare resource requirement with the availability of personnel. This information can then be used torndevelop a competent skill pool within a company and to organize training programs to improve thernworkforce with the required skill sets.
