Abstract: By assuming a wavelength independent scattering coefficients for different skin layers and using the known wavelength dependence of the absorption coefficient of oxy- and deoxy- hemoglobin and water, we have simulated the reflection spectra from skin with various level of blood oxygen saturation. Comparison of the simulation results with experimental measurements made in vivo make it possible to estimate the absorption coefficient of skin melanin in the visible and near-infrared regions. Quantitative results are presented. !31
