Abstract: Starting from first principles, the authors develop the requirements for a diode source for a laser radar system. They show how micro-collimation of incoherent diode laser arrays can produce a usable beam divergence. A unique diode source developed at Hughes Danbury Optical Systems and the associated technologies required for a compact, efficient, reliable and low divergence source are described.!
