Silicon as a negative electrode material has received a lot of attention inrnthe past few years and with good reason. On the other hand, the volumernchanges associated with the incorporation of large amounts lithium inrnsilicon raise several concerns for cell design. One major issue is thernpulverization of the active material. This decrepitation and continual solidrnelectrolyte interphase growth results in rapid capacity fade.rnIn this presentation, these challenges are explored both with a physicsbasernmodel of a cell sandwich and experimentally. Cell design andrnoperation of Li-Si full cells are compared and contrasted with morerntraditional lithium ion batteries.
