Investigation of traffic noise attenuation based on optimizing species and community of plants along avenues

The plants and tree-belts generally can attenuate the noise by reflecting, refracting and absorbing acoustic energy. However, the abilities to attenuate the noise vary a lot among different kinds of trees. If the species of trees can be arranged appropriately, they will be more effective in noise attenuation. Some kinds of trees are identified through measuring the transfer loss in a definite testing chamber. With the combination of experimental and numeric study, the sound field and noise attenuation effectiveness are investigated for some different communities along avenue, and some factors including heights, dimensions and densities of the trees are investigated. The simulation shows that the optimal community combined of arbor and bush makes noise attenuated more effectively than others. The communities of plants along the avenue are suggested to be selected and designed according to the height and location of the place need to be protected from noise, since the noise attenuation is also related to the susceptive position. This procedure can be used to optimize the plant species and community, analyze sound field along avenues, and predict the noise attenuation due to tree-belts.
