Sound power of noise sources using sound pressure derived from sound intensity measurements

This study is part of an examination of differences between sound power standards thatrequire measurement of sound pressure and those that require measurement of soundintensity. Procedures specified in ISO standards for sound power measurements using soundintensity can be tedious due to technical requirements. By contrast, the correspondingprocedures involving sound pressure measurements in ISO 3744 and ISO 3745 are based onsimplifying assumptions and require special costly facilities. This study investigates amethod where calculation of sound power uses sound pressure derived from sound intensitymeasurements following ISO draft standard 11205. Following the procedures of ISO 3744and ISO 3745 sound power levels of three small sources were estimated in three acousticalenvironments, a hemi-anechoic chamber, an office and a reverberant stairwell. The resultsindicate that accurate sound power measurements can be made using this method, even underreflecting environments that would normally be unsuitable for use with ISO 3744.
