Uncertainty calculation for hearing protector noise attenuation measurements for one specific brand in one laboratory

The objective of this paper is to quantify the uncertainty of hearing protector noise attenuation measurements and present a step by step of the calculations procedure. Noise attenuation measurements are based on REAT method which is used by both, ISO4,5 and ANSI6 standards. The uncertainty calculation is based on GUM document “Guide to express of uncertainty in measurements”. Unfortunately, the latest version of ISO and ANSI do not provide methodology for uncertainty calculation but rather give general tables of values based on experience. In the last fifteen years the uncertainty attached at ISO4,5 and ANSI6 standards went through so many changes, adding and removing and was never able to address the exact requirements. The laboratory who carries out measurements should report the uncertainty of the specific HPD model using the data of the specific subjects used.
