Vibration localization of finite plates with disordered and irregular rib spacing

The effect of disordered and irregular rib spacing on the vibration response of finite plates isstudied in this paper. It is found that general vibration reduction in the pass bands can beachieved by simply imposing a single disorder to a periodic ribbed plate. We further found thatirregular rib spacing on the ribbed plate can only localize the group of modes, where the modalresponse is dominated by coupling of flexural waves in the sub-plates and interfacing beams.Vibration confinement for the other group of modes associated with the coupling of torsionalwaves at the interfaces requires torsional stiffness irregularity to be imposed on the stiffenedbeams. Applications of vibration localization in vibration control of ship structures are alsoillustrated in this study where vibration reduction of a ship hull structure at distance away fromthe source is achieved by simply moving a few of ring frames away from the periodiclocations.
