Numerical simulation on outdoor sound propagation under the influence of wind speed gradient by the PE method

In order to estimate the influence of wind speed gradient with time variation on outdoor soundpropagation, a prediction method based on the PE method has been proposed. In the proposedmethod, the time variation in wind speed has been assumed as a collection of steady state windwith different speed and a histogram of wind speed has been prepared statistically. Then thesound pressure level (SPL) at predicting point has been calculated under each wind speedcondition corresponding to each class value of the histogram by the PE method, respectively.Finally, the weighted mean value on the SPL of all wind speed conditions has been calculatedaccording to the relative frequency of the histogram. In order to examine applicability of theprediction method, a series of measurements on outdoor sound propagation were carried out.By comparing the results between the predictions and the measurements, it has been found thatthe predicted weighted mean SPL shows good agreement with measured SPL.
