Prediction of the sound pressure level caused by technical equipment in buildings by analyzing transfer functions

The design process of buildings is strongly influenced by the prediction of sound pressurelevels in receiving rooms due to structure-borne sound caused by technical equipment inbuildings. ISO 15712 and EN 12354 specify how to calculate the sound pressure level byanalyzing the energetic role of all relevant transmission paths. However, this calculation israther complex and is only applicable for homogenous building structures. For light-weightconstructions with highly inhomogeneous structures, empirical values and examples ofconstructions have to be used to determine the sound pressure. The approach of thepresent investigation is different. Measurements of the transfer functions were taken innumerous buildings with various structures. The transfer functions were determined bymeasuring the excitation force applied to the building structure and the sound pressurelevel in the receiving room. The total sound transmission is completely described bytransfer functions as well as a transfer index, a new parameter defined as part of thepresent investigation. Based on the data, the principles for a less complicated model for theprediction of the sound pressure level are developed.
