Measurement and prediction of structure-borne sound power in plate-shaped building elements

Noise due to service equipment is a common problem in residential and office buildings. The sound power induced into a structure is caused by source-specific parameters, like source mobility, free velocity and blocked force. The present investigation aims at a characterization of structure-borne sound sources according to their source-specific parameters. The measurement of the parameters by using the reception plate method (two stage method) was investigated in detail. For different reception plates, the sound power at the contact point between source and plate as well as the sound power stored in the plate was measured. The ratio of the two values, the so-called total loss factor for each reception plate was used for a calibration of the plates.The measurements were conducted by using shakers and fans as noise sources as well as wooden materials and gypsum boards as reception plates. The sound power and the velocity on the plate surface were detected by using a 3D laser Doppler vibrometer as well as accelerometers. The investigation was carried out by applying a force at angles between 45° and 90° to the plate.
