More and more railway construction projects are now in progress with the need of increasing traffic due toeconomic growth in several countries. However, for the areas with soft ground conditions, railway traffic mayincrease the vibration level and cause human annoyance and interruption of sensitive instrumentation andprocesses. Therefore, a reliable vibration measurement scheme is needed to obtain the characteristics ofground vibration induced by passing trains, and the measurement results can be used for the selection ofvibration mitigation schemes. In this paper, the vibration characteristics induced by passing trains in bridgestructures and the related vibration criteria which house vibration-sensitive instruments and tools areintroduced. A vibration measurement scheme is proposed based on the characteristics of train-induced groundvibration and criteria for highly sensitive vibration areas. Several factors are found to dominate the accuracyof vibration measurement. These factors are discussed with the examples of field measurement results.
