NOVEL CONCEPTS FOR IMPROVING PERFORMANCE OF A CONTINUOUS FERMENTATION, MOLASSES BASED INTEGRATED MULTI-PRODUCTS DISTILLERY PLANT - A CASE STUDY

A full scale distillery plant based on continuous fermentation and integration of spentwash evaporation with multi-pressure vacuum distillation system for production of rectified spirit (60 KLPD Capacity), Extra-Neutral-Alcohol and Fuel Ethanol using Molecular Sieve Technique (55 KLPD capacity) from cane molasses have been continuous in operation since Feb. 2005 at M/s Siddapur Distilleries Ltd., Siddapur, Dist. Bagalkot ( Karnataka). The paper discusses various new concepts in Yeast Propagation, Fermentation, Distillation, and Evaporation so as to obtain higher alcohol per cent in fermented wash (maximum up to 10.5%, v/v), maximum fermentation efficiency (～ 90%) with high VFA molasses, consistent performance of evaporator system to produce less spentwash volume ( < 8 lit / lit of spirit) by sludge removal prior to distillation and very low steam consumption for wash to ENA (～ 2.70 kg/lit of spirit) and superfine quality of Rectified Spirit and Extra-Neutral-Alcohol.
