INNOVATIVE MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR INTEGRATED CANE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT

Sugarcane is the most vital input for a cane sugar factory, representing 65-70 % of the sugar manufacturing costs. It is absolutely essential for a sugar factory to ensure continuing availability of cane of good quality for maintaining its viability. The Agriculture Department of the factory attempts to achieve this through the activities of cane development and cane procurement management. However, for want of accurate and reliable information in time, it is generally unable to carry out its functions effectively, specially ensuring the active participation of the cane grower farmers. Smart Card Technology recently introduced in the country offers a workable solution to an efficient and effective M.I.S. for integrating this objective by providing a means to involve the stakeholders through a transparent means of capturing data at source and processing in time to function as a decision making tool. The paper highlights the features and working of one such solution developed using smart card applications. Benefits that would accrue both to the factory and the cane farmers in particular are presented.
