The paper reviews equilibrium reactions and solubilities of gaseous solutes in steels, kinetics of their dissolution and removal, effect of slag layer in solute uptake from atmosphere, mechanism of pore formation and preventive measures. Compilations of related equilibrium reactions and activity coefficients are given for calculations in specific steel chemistries. Effects of gaseous solutes on steel cleanliness and embrittlement are also described.
