Professor Jonas has played a signifiant role in developing a fundamental understanding of the microstructure evolution during processing of microalloyed steels. Recrystallization, precipitation phenomena and tranformation behaviour must be carefully controlled to achieve optimum properties. In the early 1990's these principles were applied to develop linepipe steels witha minium yield strength of 550 MPa. Since that time, processing schedules have evolved to alloy production of Grade 550 and 690 coiled plate in gauges ranging from 4.5 to 12.5 mm. These alloys are based on low carbon Ti-Nb chemistries. Increasing Ti from 0.025 to 0.06 wt
