ACCUMULATION AND AVAILABILITY OF OIL PALM BIOMASS IN MALAYSIA

A literature study was carried out on biomass accumulation and CO_2 uptake at an oil palm plantation in Malaysia. It has become clear that the biomass amount at the plantation is at the range of 10 to 20% of that of a natural tropical forest in the same region. However, an annual increase of the biomass was estimated to be at almost the same level for both ecosystems. Amount of lignocellulosic wastes from oil palm was also estimated from the total area of the plantation in Malaysia, which was summed up to more than 50 million tonnes per year. An estimated amount of empty fruit bunches is 5.2 million tonnes and it can be converted to 2 million tonnes of paper and paper boards, which may cover the whole demand of the products in the country.
