In Japan, Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most serious diseases of wheat and barley, and studies on its pathogens, epidemiology and control measures as well as mycotoxin contamination in the crops had been conducted. However, after the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare tentatively decided that deoxynivalenol (DON) concentration in wheat grains for the market should be less than 1.1 ppm, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries stipulated that percentage of FHB damaged wheat and barley grains for food must be less than 0.049 in 2002, the objective of FHB research in our country has been to constantly reduce FHB damaged percentage and DON contamination of wheat and barley grains to the levels decided by the government. A national FHB research project began to achieve this objective from 2003. The project includes classification and identification of FHB pathogens, development of new methods for analyzing mycotoxin concentration in wheat and grains, disease forecasting, reductions in FHB damaged percentage and DON contamination of the grains using machines, genetically modified crops, chemicals, culture methods, resistant cultivars and microorganisms. Moreover, since the causal organisms of wheat and barley FHB can also attack rice plants, which is the main crop of our country, epidemiology of FHB on rice plants and mycotoxin contamination in rice grains are being investigated in the project.
