EFFECT OF ADDITIVES ON COAL EXTRACTION

Coal extraction is an important process not only for the elucidation of the structure and reactivity of coal, but also for the development of clean and efficient coal utilization method. However, the extraction yields of coals are usually low, i.e., even the exhaustive extraction with pyridine, which is one of the best solvents for coal extraction, gave the yields from a few % to 40 %, depending on a kind of coals. Therefore, many attempts have been done so far to enhance extraction yields, and among them the use of an additive seems promising. In this presentation the effect of various additives on coal extraction, including the results obtained in our laboratory, Tohoku University, Japan, will be reviewed.
