The ordered mesoporous carbon molecular sieve, CMK-1, having a regular arrangement ofuniform mesopores in 3 nm diameter was synthesized using MCM-48 as a template andsucrose as the carbon source. Pt and Pd clusters were supported on the CMK-1 carbon by anincipient wetness technique. The catalytic activities of the metal clusters were investigatedfor liquid phase hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, 2-ethylanthraquinone, and 4-isobutylacetophenone. The results show significantly enhanced catalytic activities comparedwith those supported on active carbons commercially available. It is believed that theremarkable enhancement is due to an increase in the metal dispersion, and concurrently areduction in the pore diffusion resistance of the mesopoous CMK-1 structure.
