The ability of five bacterial strains designated BAS-Cr1, MAB-Cr1, RAS-Cr1, RETL-Cr1 and RETL-Cr3 derived from petrochemical wastewater treatment plants to carry out biodegradation of phenol was studied. The results indicate that both glucose and phenol were utilized simultaneously. The highest degradation of phenol was achieved by isolate RETL-Cr1. This bacteria, non-spore forming and catalase positive have the ability of degrading phenol up to 99.9% at mean generation time of u 0.405 h~(-1) in the presence and 0.367 h~(-1) in the absence of glucose. Phenol degradation was found less efficient by other isolates and none were capable of degrading phenol in the glucose-free medium. Only in the presence of glucose, isolate RAS-Cr1 was able to degrade phenol up to 29% at u 0.303 h~(-1) as compared to BAS-Cr1 (17% at u 0.256 h~(-1)), RETL-Cr3 (16% at u 0.360 h~(-1)) and MAB-Cr1 (14% at u 0.363 h~(-1)).
