ON THE ACOUSTICS OF A THICK SHEAR LAYER

The transmission and reflection of sound in a thick shear layer with a hyperbolic tangent velocity profile is discussed, for arbitrary ratio of the wavelength λ to the lengthscale L of the shear flow. The analysis includes the opposite limits of the vortex sheet λ/L 1 and ray theory λ~2 L~2 and concentrates in the more interesting case of wavelength comparable to the lengthscale of the shear flow λ～ L.
