In this paper, we focus attention on the visible light communication systems using an LEDarray as a transmitter and a high-speed camera as a receiver for road-to-vehiclecommunications in intelligent transport systems. Previously, we have proposed thehierarchical coding scheme which enables reception of high-priority data even if the receiveris far from the transmitter and have confirmed the effectiveness of the hierarchical codingscheme from results of primitive implementation experiments. However, there are manyimportant works to develop the real-time communication system for an actual drivingsituation. In this paper, we discuss a robust receiver design in an actual driving situation. Weintroduce a series of image processing operations and demonstrate their effectiveness by fieldtrials. As the results of the field trials, we have achieved 16kbps transmission and error-freecommunication up to communication distance of 70m using 16x16 LED array (transmitter)and high-speed camera (receiver) with the frame rate of 1000.
