The level of roadway lighting is an important factor for the safety of roadways during thernnighttime, especially for pedestrians. Past studies have shown that over fifty percent ofrnpedestrian crashes occurred during nighttime. Most of these were fatal and severe injuryrncrashes. These results make it clear that proper design and timely maintenance of streetrnlighting will definitely help improve the safety of the roadway system. To evaluate thernroadway lighting systems and maintain their functionality, it is essential to perform fieldrnlighting measurements. Currently, field measurements of roadway lighting systems arernoften conducted by handheld light meters at a short sample section of roadways. Thernevaluation of an entire corridor or a longer roadway section is difficult when using therntraditional manual measurement methods. This study addresses this difficulty byrndeveloping a mobile lighting measurement system that can be used to collect massivernlighting level data in a safe and efficient way.rnIn this study, a mobile lighting measurement system was developed and installed in a testrnvehicle to collect illuminance data along a corridor of U.S. 19 in Pinellas County, Florida.rnThe night time pedestrian crash data were collected for a three year period. Thernpreliminary study shows that the frequency of nigh time pedestrian crash at low lightingrnlevel segments is much higher than those segments with a high illuminance level.
