Re-analysis of Sanliurfa tunnels by finite element method

Numerical solutions are widely utilized as a design tool to analyze stresses and deformations around an underground structure. One of them is finite element method (FEM) that can be used to provide analysis in which the rock is modeled with appropriate boundary conditions and support system. Beside design analysis of an underground structure, it can provide rational solutions to the problems which can develop in evaluating existing structures, post failure analysis, monitoring and control of construction, in location of instrumentation and in the analysis of laboratory test specimens. It also considers the influence of sequential excavation and construction procedure that can be best represented by three-dimensional models. This paper introduces the results of FEM analyses performed for Sanliurfa Tunnels, which is the longest water conveyance tunnels of the world. All analyses were performed under external loading conditions.
