An improved rational polynomial approximation (RPA) method formulti input multi output (MIMO) systems is presented. A transferfunction model is constructed from the experimentally obtainedfrequency response function data using a maximum likelihoodestimation approach. Analytically determined model of the system isincorporated in this RPA method to obtain a more reliable model, evenin the low frequency range, where the excitation energy is limited.Shaking table test for an actively controlled, two-story bench-scalebuilding employing an active mass damper is conducted to verify thesuggested method. The results show that the proposed method is quiteeffective and robust for system identification of MIMO systems.
