Effects of Steel Slag on the Formation and Hydration Properties of Portland Cement Clinker

The effect of steel slag as a raw material in clinker production on the formation and hydration properties of Portland cement clinker is investigated using XRD, optical microscopy, microcalorimetry et. al. The results of f-CaO content show that steel slag promotes the combination oif-CaO in clinkerization process, the XRD characteristic peaks of alite suggest that steel slag as a raw material does not influence the modification of alite polymorphs, and optical microscopic photoes indicate that alite in clinker formation with steel slag are bettercrystallized. The calorimetric curves of clinker hydration show that, when comparing with clinker burned without steel slag, the clinker burned with has longer induction period and the main peak of heat evolution becomes wider and lower. Nevertheless total heat released by clinker with and without steel slag in 80 hours is approximately the same.
