Building adaptive Information Retrieval Systems for Organizational Memories: a case study

Our research project concerns the elaboration of hybrid Organizational Memories (OM), based on the coupling between a Documents' Base (DB) and a Knowledge Base (KB). One of the roles of the KB is to contextualize the documents, thus facilitating their exploitation. Yet, the question of the diffusion of the modelled knowledge is raised. In order to solve this problem, we propose to add to the OM a model of the information it contains, making abstraction of the way the information is specified (it is either contained in the DB or the KB). In this paper, we show that this approach has two benefits: firstly, it helps the user expressing his/her information needs; secondly, it also helps the OM to adapt its responses to the user's requirements. This approach is illustrated with an example of development of a R&D Project Memory.
