Industrial processes often generate large volumes of wastewater containing organic contaminants. Since there are millions of organic compounds, Total Organic Carbon (TOC) describes and quantifies the sum of these organic contaminants and groups all organic compounds into a single aggregated measurement. TOC is useful to monitor for contaminants in boiler condensate, detect product loss, and monitor discharge. However, some streams present a c hallenge for TOC measurement. Often, these challenges are resolved through pre-filtration, the addition of strong, hazardous oxidants, and the introduction of expensive catalysts. However, pre-filtration may remove the same organic particles that should be accounted for in the measurement. Also, catalysts and strong oxidizing reagents add operational costs, increase maintenance requirements, and burden the operator with the task of storing and disposing of hazardous chemicals. What's needed is a method that can measure TOC in an unfiltered sample without the need for catalysts and reagents.
